Planar Cell Polarity: A Bridge Too Far?

چکیده
The mechanisms of planar cell polarity are being revealed by genetic analysis. Recent studies have provided new insights into interactions between three proteins involved in planar cell polarity: Flamingo, Frizzled and Van Gogh.

Mutations have been identified in a non-canonical Wnt signalling cascade (the planar cell polarity pathway) in several mouse genetic models of severe neural tube defects. In each of these models, neurulation fails to be initiated at the 3-4 somite stage, leading to an almost entirely open neural tube (termed craniorachischisis). Studies in whole embryo culture have identified a defect in the mo...

Memory resistor or memristor is already fabricated successfully using current nano dimension technology. Based on its unique hysteresis, the amount of resistance remains constant over time, controlled by the time, the amplitude, and the polarity of the applied voltage. The unique hysteretic current-voltage characteristic in the memristor causes this element to act as a non-volatile resistive me...

The adult eye of Drosophila is a highly ordered structure composed of about 800 ommatidia, each displaying precise polarity. The planar polarity is reflected in the mirror-symmetric arrangement of ommatidia relative to the dorso-ventral midline, the equator. This arrangement is generated when ommatidia rotate towards the equator and the photoreceptor R3 displaces R4 creating different chiral fo...

The core components of the planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling system, including both transmembrane and peripheral membrane associated proteins, form asymmetric complexes that bridge apical intercellular junctions. While these can assemble in either orientation, coordinated cell polarization requires the enrichment of complexes of a given orientation at specific junctions. This might occur by ...
متن کاملDissecting the molecular bridges that mediate the function of Frizzled in planar cell polarity.
Many epithelia have a common planar cell polarity (PCP), as exemplified by the consistent orientation of hairs on mammalian skin and insect cuticle. One conserved system of PCP depends on Starry night (Stan, also called Flamingo), an atypical cadherin that forms homodimeric bridges between adjacent cells. Stan acts together with other transmembrane proteins, most notably Frizzled (Fz) and Van G...
